PERFECT ORDER

Within the Material Handling Industry, many have been talking about the Perfect Order and Perfect Order Index, which Kate Visatek, Founder of Supply Chain Visions Ltd., has done many studies on and written much about in trade press.

The Perfect Order Index is a measuring tool for companies to measure:

1. their order accuracy
2. their on time fulfillment cycle to their customers
3. Improvements within their supply chain system

In the fast paced e-commerce fulfillment world, with order profiles being very small, the Perfect Order Index is becoming the most important measurement tool today. Adding a paper component to the order process often inhibits the success of the Perfect Order. PSI Engineering fondly referred to as paper handling experts, have implemented the Perfect Order concept on the distribution center (DC) floor with great success.

INSTALLATION:  Multiple Product – E-Commerce Distribution Center

A large multiple product e-commerce distribution center needed to increase the order throughput from 20,000 orders per day to 60,000 orders per day in their peak shipping season.

This company’s order profile concluded that 80% of orders were single line items with a quantity of one item (one product was ordered from their many products 80% of the time). Even though this company had decided to use high speed automation, they could not engineer their DC to accomplish this task of 60K orders per day with their simulations.

PSI Engineering, Invoice Insertion experts suggested the Perfect Order concept to help them attain their goal of 60K orders per day.  As often is the case, unusual or new concepts are sometimes given unusual looks to those who present them. After explaining that, if the cube, invoice, catalogues, shipping labels and product were given equal status within the order process, it wouldn’t make any difference where any of the components for each order were placed into the container for that order. The PSI Intelligent Order Start concept was to select the proper carton, release it to the conveyor lines, apply the shipping labels on to the carton and feed the invoice and catalogues into the box before sending it to the “pick to light” (P2L) stations.

Once the products are picked the order is now complete and ready to be sealed. Void fill is included if necessary. This company was able to surpass their engineering goal and with the Perfect Order concept, their shipping error is now exceeding their Six Sigma objective. Now, they are achieving 100% shipping order accuracy. PSI Engineering supplied the Print Feeder DF, laser printing, folding and feeding systems for the invoice insertion for this project. PSI Engineering also introduced their new customer to the Perfect Order and Intelligent Order Start concepts.
